2019 A/W Shenzhen Fashion Week x KING PING | The " Ultimate Motive " Behind Freedom and Unrestrained Style
" What is the magic behind this brand that has been around for over 20 years? "Wang Ping, the designer and brand manager of independent designer brand KING PING , wants to give an official answer to this question that we have been pondering at the 2019 Autumn/Winter Shenzhen Fashion Week.
Wang Ping began his creative work 20 years ago . He was the first to implement original Chinese footwear design in a designer brand. Given the conservative and closed social environment of the time, lacking individuality, this pioneer in independent design was a true hero . Not all changes are accompanied by bloodshed, but when asked about the hardships he endured, he always downplayed them. Perhaps these are unimportant; what matters most is the brand's continued development and undeniable achievements. He is a pioneer of original footwear design in China. To date, KING PING 's product range includes, but is not limited to, shoes, clothing, bags, and accessories—Wang Ping is proficient in all these areas.
This designer, who aspired to be a philosopher in his youth, first introduced philosophical concepts into his designs. While achieving high artistic and aesthetic value, he deliberately emphasized the output of culture and spirit. This aligns perfectly with the theme of the KING PING show at Shenzhen Fashion Week . From beginning to end, Wang Ping focused on portraying the freedom of thought and design. The freedom of the mind must first be achieved through the freedom of the body; therefore, the clothing we wear becomes particularly important. Fashion designers are never just creating clothes; they are creating a " revolution . " Behind this seemingly casual and unrestrained freedom lies Wang Ping's " ulterior motive . "The theme of this session:
Thought
Without freedom of thought, what is left of humanity? This is especially true for designers. A designer's worth lies not in the amount of technical skills they possess, but in the rational critical awareness cultivated through daily training. Once a designer loses freedom of thought, it is as if they have lost themselves.Wang Ping understood this better than anyone. When external forces are constantly trying to change you and reshape you, they force you to accept mainstream values and aesthetics, and the opinions of the loudest voices — even if those opinions may be illogical, inhumane, and completely contrary to your will. But true free spirits, as long as they have a breath left, will always try to make their voices heard. This is also a key reason why Wang Ping chose " thought " as the theme for this brand show . He doesn't want to be part of the " silent majority , " and after 20 years with the brand , he wants to say something. In his view, time and everything else are finite, but thought is boundless. It can be unconstrained by any social system, without any obstacles, constantly trying to innovate and then create. Every thought has its necessity and rationality. Therefore, the works he presented this time were also created without any obstacles, letting go of all his ideas. By playing with different fabrics, silhouettes, and cuts, and through technological innovation, he realized what he had wanted to do for many years. Bold imagination and dedicated creation—this is the spirit of Wang Ping.Inspiration for this event:
Deconstructionism and Cosmic Worms
this KING PING brand show were divided into three series. The first series is inextricably linked to the universe. " Wormholes " are narrow passages that may exist in the universe, connecting two different points in spacetime. Through wormholes, one could instantly travel through space and freely traverse time. Although scientists still lack strong evidence to prove the existence of wormholes, this imaginative theory has provided designers with many wonderful inspirations. Through hand-knitted sweaters with countless holes, different knots can be threaded back and forth to create various shapes. Hollow elements are also incorporated into the shoe designs; a pair of shoes can also be a garment. Each piece is unique and offers several different ways to wear it. The designer hopes to give the work a certain amount of blank space and room for creativity, making it possible for the audience to participate in the design process by having greater autonomy and interactivity.
In the second series, the designer used deconstructionism, a concept from continental European philosophy and cultural criticism, as a blueprint to create " Construction . " In philosophy, deconstructionism is essentially a critical method, meaning to dissolve, dismantle, and reveal. In clothing, the designer uses artistic means to dissolve stable garment structures. Each deconstruction manifests as an interruption or fragmentation, yet each result generates new creation. Therefore, he employed extensive use of rope and ribbon structures for weaving and recombination. These seemingly minor details are cleverly transformed into garments in the designer's hands.Highlights of this match:

Chapter 42 of the Tao Te Ching states: " The Tao gives birth to One; One gives birth to Two; Two gives birth to Three; Three gives birth to all things. All things carry Yin and embrace Yang, and through the interaction of these two forces, harmony is achieved. " Chinese civilization has long possessed a comprehensive understanding of the truth of the universe. From Fuxi's creation of the world with a single stroke, to Yin and Yang, and then to the concept of " One , " these most basic philosophical theories of ancient China have provided designers with ample guidance and direction.
The third series, and the highlight of the show, is " One . " In design, " One " can be interpreted as " a single piece " —a piece of fabric, a sheet of leather. The designer uses a single piece of fabric to complete an entire garment, without splicing or piling together fabrics; the fabric is folded and sewn in different ways. The shoes in this " One " series are inspired by humanity's first pair of shoes. In ancient times, the first shoes were made by completely covering the feet with animal hides. The designer uses a single piece of leather with highly complex and challenging techniques to cut and create these shoes, paying homage to humanity's most primitive imagination. From a philosophical perspective, Lao Tzu's " One " represents the beginning, the origin of all things and life in the universe. " Zero " represents nothingness, while " One " signifies departure and exploration. The designer's incorporation of the philosophical concept of " One " into their work seems to be a statement of their own voice, a hope that even after 20 years, the brand will remain true to its original aspirations and forge ahead. Never satisfied, always remaining that " One . "Details of this match:

In the world of KING PING , the most interesting perspective is: how can clothing be just clothing? The product of the designer's unrestrained imagination is that KING PING shoes can be clothing, clothing can be shoes, and even bags can be worn as shoes. This kind of artistic creation that breaks down the boundaries of design categories seems almost impossible to many. But in Wang Ping's eyes, this is how design becomes truly interesting. After years of design work, Wang Ping suddenly realized that design is essentially about the relationship between objects and people. With this concept, the boundaries of design can be completely broken. In his works, one can clearly feel different concepts such as architecture, space, and geometry. He was the first to integrate other design ideas, making KING PING 's works not just works of art, but works of art worthy of collection.
20 years, Wang Ping has been reflecting on the concept of " freedom . " In the early days of building his brand, many obstacles forced him to be hesitant and restrictive. However, after years of experience, a successful development model has given him the courage and strength to focus more on design. He no longer worries about market acceptance or the high costs and long lead times of purely handmade products, as society's aesthetic standards and tolerance are gradually improving. Now, he can boldly try everything he wants to do, and all the recognition and honors he has received are thanks to himself, his team, and of course, to this era.KING PING and designer Wang Ping pay tribute to the future and the past, to the different ways people think, and to this era of free thought and boundless art!Designer Documents
